Baltimore Farmers Market

Baltimore, Aug. 17: The Baltimore Farmers Market was jam packed when we arrived, but we didn't let the crowds deter us. Summer produce was at its height: heirloom tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, beans, squashes, cantaloupes, summer apples, peaches, nectarines, bi-colored sweet corn, mushrooms, bedding plants, etc. We stood in line for the shelled beans: black beans, lima beans, crowder peas and black eyed peas. We tasted the various dill pickles and devoured the fried mushrooms and the mini donuts.

It's almost impossible to be in Baltimore and forgo a sandwich at Attman's:
Mollie was happy to have us back home.

Superman Ends 2008 Screen on the Green

Aug. 11: We had Cape Cod weather for the final Screen on the Superman. Lisa did the starters, David did the meal and Ellen did the dessert--a ginger blackberry trifle! We were prepared for the temperature to drop to 70 degrees, bringing shawls, sweaters and flannel shirts.

Asian Festival

This Asian Festival in Northern Virginia pales by comparison with either of the Thai Songkran festivals in Maryland. It may be a monument to intra-Asian peace and solidarity as it incorporates multiple cultures from seven Asian nations, however it is in a poor location for a festival. Located across Baren Cameron Avenue from Lake Anne village center, the site has little parking nearby and the booths are spread out along the narrow roads in a recreational park. It's more like a strip mall than a festival.

There was food: Thai mussel omelet (l) and sticky rice in bamboo:

Pad Thai noodles and grilled skewers:

And entertainment: Philippine tinikling:

And Jiu-Jitsu:

And shopping and music:

Saturday Market, Lake Anne

Reston, Aug. 9: On our way to the Asian Festival, we happened onto this bazaar and farmers market at the Lake Anne village center.

A Summer's Day at Stoney's

Broomes Island, MD: You go to Stoney's for the food and the view.
The rockfish sandwich and the Key lime pie:

Each summer as the salinity rises in the Patuxent River, Nettles appear, putting a premature end to the swimming season.
