On the Road to Savannah

July 2, 2009: On I-95 southbound, traffic was surprisingly moderate in Virginia but fairly heavy in the Carolinas. We backed up for one accident:

Otherwise, we stopped for welcome center restrooms, gasoline and a late lunch at the fabulous Fuller's Old Fashioned BBQ off Exit 20, ub Lumberton, N.C. The lunch buffet has bbq pork, fried chicken, fried fish, chicken 'n' dumpling, beef stew, chicken livers, chicken gizzards, fried okra, butter beans, blacked eyed peas, field peas, green beans, corn, rutabaga, turnip greens, cabbage, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes with gravy, rice, fried okra, macaroni 'n' cheese, hush puppies, biscuits, fried cornmeal cakes, etc.; and there's also a salad buffet and a dessert buffet!

I-95 skirts to the west of Savannah. Persons going to the historic downtown or the islands to the east leave I-95 at Hardeeville, SC and take the US 17 shortcut to the Talmadge Bridge. The first exit after the bridge puts you in the heart of historic Savannah. We arrived on a stereotypical hazy, humid summer's day (the humidity disappeared for the rest of our stay). The historic district drips with Spanish moss:

The Telfair Mansion (1875) which houses part of the Telfair Museum and the gold-domed City Hall:

Crossing Richardson Creek on the way to Wilmington Island:
July 3, 1990: What a difference one night makes: low humidity (Mercer House on the left: Nota bene, Mercer house is askew because the photographer was experimenting with drive-by photography):
